Mind Your Words:What you consistently speak, you eventually begin to live.

Words Carry Spiritual Weight

Clear your mind for a moment and reflect on this. Have you ever experienced someone saying something and then it happened? And you sat there thinking, wow… they really called that.

In my culture, for those of you who may not know, I was born and raised in the Caribbean. Growing up, we often heard our grandparents refer to certain people as having a “goat mouth.” It basically means that whatever they say comes to pass. But the truth is, this idea is not folklore. It is biblical.

Scripture says,

  • “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” (Proverbs 18:21, KJV).

In other words, our words carry weight. They produce something. They move in a direction, and whether we realize it or not, we often live in the fruit of what we have been speaking. So let’s talk about why.

Created in His Image: Speaking as Our Creator Speaks

Genesis tells us that we were made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). Now this does not mean we are equal to God. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts and His ways higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8–9). But it does mean that our character, our behavior, and even how we function on the earth should reflect something of our Creator.

And how did God create the world?

He spoke.

“Let there be light,” and there was light (Genesis 1:3 NIV).

There was no hesitation. No uncertainty. No wavering belief in light might not come. What He spoke came into existence.

If God created by speaking, and we are made in His likeness, then it should not surprise us our words also shape the environments we live in. We may not create universes, but we absolutely influence our circumstances, attitudes, homes, and even our expectations by what we consistently say.

Our words reveal what we believe. And what we believe eventually shows up in how we live.

Storytime…

I love babies. I really do. They are cute,  smell amazing, and there is something so special about new life. But the process of being pregnant for nine months? I did not love that part at all. The morning sickness, swollen feet, insomnia, all of it.

Before I was ever pregnant, I used to say all the time that I didn’t think I could carry a baby for nine months. I would joke and say, why can’t we be like cats and just do three months? Then one day a friend told me elephants carry for almost two years and I said, oh Lord, never mind.

After that, I started saying something different. I would say there are twelve months in a year, and my pregnancy would stay within one year. Nine months out of one year. I said it often.

Then I got pregnant.

And throughout my pregnancy, whenever friends called to ask how I was doing, my answer was usually the same. I am ready to not be pregnant anymore.

Now, were there medical and physical factors that contributed to my baby arriving earlier than expected? Yes. But I also had to confront something honestly. My words and my attitude were not aligned with patience or gratitude for the process. I was constantly speaking of exhaustion and an eagerness for it to be over.

Looking back, I truly believe  if my posture and words had been different, I may have carried to full term. That experience taught me something deeply personal. Words are not harmless. They shape expectation, and expectation shapes outcome.

We see this in everyday life. Have you ever seen a parent constantly speak negatively over a child? Calling them troublesome, difficult, or a problem? Over time, that is exactly what begins to manifest. But when a child is spoken over with life, encouragement, and purpose, something different grows.

Words influence outcomes!

Dr. Myles Munroe explains this power Superbly in Understanding the Purpose and Power of Prayer. He reminds us that salvation itself happens through confession and belief. Scripture says, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9 NIV).

So if words have the power to usher someone into eternal life, then what effect do our everyday words have on our lives?

If you constantly say, “I am catching hell,” you may unknowingly be agreeing with struggle. If you continually speak defeat, your mind begins to expect defeat. We can be positively or negatively affected by what we say.

So the question becomes, what do you say when life gets hard? What do you say when things are not going your way?

Words Shape Identity and Environment

This was a serious lesson for me personally. I had to start paying attention to how I spoke about myself and my children. I used to joke about being forgetful and wore it almost like a badge of honor. And guess what? I forgot everything.

I had to change my confession. Scripture says we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16), and that “the memory of the just is blessed” (Proverbs 10:7 NIV). When I began to speak differently, my mindset began to change.

Parenting also humbled me here. Toddlers can be messy, loud, and exhausting. I remember complaining to my friend Karla about how messy my youngest was and even comparing him to his brother. Huge error. “She corrected me and said, do not call him messy. Say he is creative and still learning.” She jokingly said he was dabbling in interior design but needed more training. I laughed, but it shifted my perspective completely. The situation felt lighter because now my mind set changed and so did my words.

This is why I am very careful about what people say over my children. No one is allowed to label them with negative words. The same applies to us. If you constantly call yourself crazy, broken, or incapable, you begin to live within those labels. If keep saying you live with anxiety that is exactly what you will experience everyday of your life! Scripture tells us,

  • “You will also declare a thing, And it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways.” (Job 22:28-29 NKJV).

So if you confess that you are a good employee, that is what you will become, and God will give you the grace to see it through. When we speak excellence over our work and lives, we begin to live differently because our words agree with God’s standard.

Renewing the Soil of the Heart

Now, some of you may be thinking, but I speak positively and nothing is changing.

Here is a revelation the Lord gave me a few years ago.

Farmers understand soil cannot produce endlessly without rest and renewal. After seasons of planting and harvesting, the soil must regenerate because it becomes depleted. Anything planted in unhealthy soil struggles to grow.

Our hearts and minds work the same way.

If we have spent years speaking negativity, fear, criticism, and defeat, the soil of our hearts becomes saturated with those things. Then when we try to plant faith filled words, they struggle to take root.

What we often need is soil regeneration.

The soil is our heart, mindset, and  belief system. The organic matter that restores it is the Word of God. Truth replaces lies. Life replaces death. Over time, the soil becomes healthy again, and fruit begins to grow naturally.

Many of us are not failing because words do not work. We are struggling because our soil needs renewal, and  renewal begins with intentional speech.

Here is the task I want to leave you with this week.

Pay attention to what comes out of your mouth. Not just in church. Not just in prayer, but in everyday conversation. What are you agreeing with? What are you reinforcing?

Ask the Lord to help you speak life even when circumstances look difficult. Speak truth even when emotions say otherwise. Speak faith even before you see results, because eventually, you will eat the fruit of what you have been saying.

The beautiful thing is this... You get to choose what you plant today.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for the gift of Your Word and the power You have placed in what we speak. Teach us to guard our mouths and align our words with truth and life. Help us to recognize where we have spoken fear, defeat, or negativity, and give us the grace to replace those words with faith.

Renew our hearts and restore the soil of our minds so that Your Word may take root and bear fruit in every area of our lives. Let our speech reflect Your character, our confession reflect Your promises, and our lives reflect Your goodness.

Teach us to speak life over our families, work, children, and   future. May our words agree with heaven and not with fear. Strengthen us to speak with wisdom, patience, and faith, even when circumstances challenge us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

May this be a reminder that transformation begins in the heart and is revealed through what we speak. This is the journey of Hearts Renewed — transformed by grace, renewed for purpose. With Love & Prayers, Ketisha
